Place your fingers on the home row keys: ASDF for left hand and JKL; for right hand. This is your starting position for touch typing.
Left pinky: A, Left ring: S, Left middle: D, Left index: F. These fingers also reach for keys to their left.
Right index: J, Right middle: K, Right ring: L, Right pinky: ;. These fingers also reach for keys to their right.
Both thumbs should rest on the spacebar. Use your right thumb for spacing after typing with your right hand, and left thumb after typing with your left hand.
Keep your fingers curved and close to the keys. Move only the finger needed to press a key, keeping other fingers in position.
Each finger is responsible for a specific column of keys. Practice reaching for keys without looking at the keyboard.
Use your left pinky for the left shift key and right pinky for the right shift key. Use the opposite hand's shift key from the letter you're typing.
Start with the home row keys and gradually add more keys as you become comfortable. Use our Keyboard Tutor for guided practice.
